LEWSEY MISERY 24th June 2006

Today's tournament at Lewsey Park ended in misery for USL, as both entered teams failed to go beyond the quarter final stage. USL 'A' began disappointingly, losing 2-1 to Halyard Youth Centre. The scorer of the match Yasir Rashid scored his second against Lewsey Park which ended in a 1-1 draw. The final match against the mighty St. Joseph's 'A' squad produced the shock result of the tournament. Yasir Rashid scored a further two goals and Peter Wilson getting his first, which sent St. Joseph's crashing out of the tournament losing 3-2. In the quarter finals, USL came up against Ewe & Lamb. They came twice from behind but eventually lost the game 3-2. The first equaliser was from Yasir Rashid and the second from USL's in form supremo Peter Wilson.

USL 'B' began with a 0-0 draw against St. Joseph's 'B', and went on to lose 1-0 to Azurri Azurri in their second match. The final match against Who's Next FC ended in 2-0 defeat. Manager Steve Blackhurst told USL Web: "Today's tournament gave me tremendous understanding in what needs to be done here at USL. I am sure in weeks to come we will build on our weaknesses and raise our overall playing performance to respectable heights." Secretary Shakayet Hussain also stated that beating St. Joseph's was something to give back to the fans. He told USL Web: "In last year's Sportsman Dunstable's 11 a side tournament we thrashed them 5-1 and to beat them again is a great feeling, especially when they are viewed as the 'Liverpool' of our region." The annual event is participated by employees at Barclays's 250 branches right across the country. In the final Luton swept away Liverpool 7-5 to become national champions and both USL players played a significant role in the win. Well done boys!

USL AGREE SPONSORSHIP WITH BARKET 19th May 2006

USL have agreed a one year club sponsorship deal with leading finance and mortgage company Barket. The deal is worth a staggering four thousand pounds a year and is thought to be the biggest of its kind in the Luton Sunday League. Vice President Abdul Haque told USL Web: "I am ecstatic over the deal. It goes to show how far USL have come. From a little unknown club trying hard to find two legs, to one setting standards both on and off the field. The money will go a long way in improving all departments of the club." Who are Barket?

USL SHATTER HOUGHTON 14th May 2006

United Sporting Luton 10 Houghton Revolution 0

USL Manager Azad Ali fielded a weakened line up against bottom of the table Houghton Revolution and still managed to get a 10-0 win. Up to 5 senior players were rested to give players who spent most of the season on the subs bench, a chance to play the whole 90 minutes. Ali told USL Web " I knew that whatever the result today, we will finish mid table. As there was nothing to play for I rewarded the subs by giving them a chance to play longer than usual. Their loyalty to the club is something I am very proud off." The game began slowly and a lot of the chances created failed to find the net. Houghton are at the foot of the table and on today's performance it's not difficult to see why. Although their players had tremendous passion to win, they lacked the skill and flair showcased by the USL players. The most notable performances came from Yasir Rashid who produced some fantastic runs through the midfield and Duhaj Uddin, who was a giant in defence. The most spectacular goal came from Christian Baxter, who picked the ball from some 30 yeards on the left, ran with the ball to the edge of the Houghton box and in a low acute angle smashed the ball in to the back of the net. It's his second goal of the season and jokingly commented "If I was put on more, I could've been top scorer for the season." All in all, it was a good end to what has become USL's best season so far.

  • USL Man of the match - Duhaj Uddin
  • USL Fair player - Ben Swiercz
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 4, Colin Thomas 2, Aziz Miah, Mohbub Hussain, Christian Baxter and Peter Wilson
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Ashu Besung 7/10

THREE POINTS WITHOUT PLAYING 7th May 2006

United Sporting Luton 0 Luton Warriors 0

The league has awarded all three points to USL against the Luton Warriors. The decision comes after Beds FA suspended the Warriors for one match. This was due to the heated match between them and AFC Chalkhill in the A&B Sports League cup back on the 26th February. That match was called off by referee Paul Lowe after he felt the game was uncontrollable. The outcome received mixed feelings in the USL camp. Secretary Shakayet Hussain is happy with the three points because he believes the club have a very good chance of finishing mid table, something they failed to do in the past. However, Coach Kukon Miah told USL web "I was really looking forward to this match because I wanted to see how our defenders battle with their (Warriors) frontline. In the last game they had 5 players attacking our end and on that day I thought our back line was superb. Games against Warriors are a treat to the eyes." Coincidentally, had today's game taken place, it would have been the Warriors last game of the season. USL are on 28 points and can move on to 31 if they beat Houghton Revolution at home next week.

USL LOSE CUP BUT WIN ADMIRATION 30th April 2006

Bedfordshire FA Centenary Cup Final 2006

AFC Chalkhill 0 United Sporting Luton 0 (aet 4-0)

This was a well fought final that will be long remembered by both teams. It had all the ingredients a thrilling match can possibly have. From a carnival day atmosphere to non stop counter attacking play that led to spectators applauding both finalists for a wonderful day out. The game began in lively fashion with Chalkhill going close to taking an early lead. However, USL keeper Samuel Shinkaiye made some breath taking saves to keep the score 0-0 at half time. At the interval the underdogs (USL) were probably the happiest of the two teams, leaving favourites Chalkhill contemplating if a shock defeat was about to unfold. They were the better side yet struggled to find the back of the USL net. At times it seemed luck wasn't on their side and frustration was getting the better of them.

The second half continued in the same manner as the first half. Both teams worked hard to weave some magic to find a route to goal. Overall Chalkhill had superior ball possession and went close to scoring on three occasions, narrowly missing the target. USL on the other hands, managed just a few shots on target but did ever so well to keep the score 0-0 after normal play. In extra time, USL's game plan of taking Chalkhill to a penalty shoot out was foiled by a deflection. Shinkaiye thought he had the shot covered but a wicked deflection inside the penalty area led to Chalkhill going 1-0 up. USL picked up the ball and captain Peter Wilson urged his players to raise their heads and fight on. For a moment USL thought that a comeback was every bit possible. But when Chalkhill took a 2-0 lead, that belief gradually faded away. The third goal followed almost immediately and with Mujahid Zaman scoring an goal, 4-0 wasn't a result that USL was hoping for. In a space of 20 minutes USL's dream of lifting up the Centenary Cup was devastatingly blown away. As the final whistle was blown on what was a thrilling encounter, the victorious Chalkhill team were quick to praise their opponents. Secretary Shakayet Hussain could be heard telling his USL players, not to be ashamed of the score line but proud of keeping one of the best sides in Bedfordshire scoreless for 90 minutes.

There were a few minor scuffles throughout the match but referee Godfrey Fredrick of Flitwick was on top form and acted sensibly on all occasions. In all a total of 4 yellow cards were shown by Fredrick and all for unsporting behaviour. The number of people attending the match was just below 200 and both sets of supporters applauded the players participating in the final. They just finished seeing a game worthy of remembrance.

  • USL Man of the match - Aziz Miah
  • USL Fair player - Shamim Ali
  • Scorers - None
  • Cards - Junaid Afzal and Peter Wilson (yellow)
  • Referee - Godfrey Fredrick 9/10
  • Attendance - 194
TAJUL OUT FOR TWO MONTHS 28th April 2006

Winger Tajul Islam has been told by his doctor that he shall have to stop playing for up to two months because of a ligament injury. Islam is devastated upon hearing the news, especially when the club's biggest game of its history is taking place this coming Sunday. He told USL Web 'I was looking forward to this match since the semi final win against Bedford Pad. It's heartbreaking to be told that I will be out for such along time.' Manager Azad Ali is now in a spot of bother. There aren't too many wingers in the team and Tajul Islam's non presence may lead him to change formation as well as overall tactical play. Islam will be seeing a injury specialist in a fortnight.

RECORD SPONSORSHIP DEAL 27th April 2006

USL Web has learnt today that the club may soon be agreeing on a record breaking sponsorship deal with a leading finance and mortgage company. The club's board of directors appear to be staying silent over the rumours and are not prepared to make a statement. Club Vice President Abdul Haque told USL Web 'I have been advised by the board that the matter should only be discussed once the deal is signed. All I will say is that if it does go through, it will be the biggest sponsorship deal in Luton Sunday league football. We have set down with the interested body and have exchanged ideas on how both parties can benefit from the sponsorship. Our presentation it seems has made a good impression and was told that the company will contact us in a fortnight with their final answer. So far it's looking highly promising as I honestly feel that the deal will happen.'

USL FIND FORM AT THE RIGHT TIME 23rd April 2006

Stopsley Common 2 United Sporting Luton 6

USL won 6-2 today against an under strength Stopsley Common team. Whether or not the Commoners took the game seriously is something the season's dark horses will only know. Infact, USL could well have gone into double figures if it weren't for the endless chances not finding the net. Peter Wilson was terrific in midfield and caused mayhem in the Stopsley defence. Yasir Rashid enjoyed playing some of his best football of the season. The USL top scorer was at times breathtaking to watch and was unfortunate in not getting his fifth hat trick of the season. However, the heroes of the day were the USL defence who held the back line well and closed down the Stopsley Forwards on numerous occasions. Kevin Garbett who came back to first team duties after a lengthy spell made some well timed tackles. Garbett told USL Web "Having kept an eye on Stopsley's progress this season I thought like many, that we will be lucky to get a draw. Instead all of us played some cutting edge football and proved to ourselves that we can be very good on our day." USL are now six games unbeaten and appear to have found form at the right time. Next week it's the Beds Centenary Cup final and USL will be hoping that recent turnarounds will shine off against the league leaders Chalkhill.

  • USL Man of the match - Duhaj Uddin
  • USL Fair player - Kevin Garbett
  • Scorers - Peter Wilson 2, Ajmol Ali 2, Junaid Afzal and Yasir Rashid
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Declan McCabe 8/10
  • Attendance - 6

RAZOR RAZAK IS BACK 20th April 2006

Yes fans, the Razor is back. Since October last year Abdel Razak took leave from playing duties and has been greatly missed. Razak told USL Web that he is looking forward to playing again and can't wait to get on the field. Razak scored 3 goals in 5 matches and manager Azad Ali deeply missed his predatory instincts. With the final approaching in a fortnight, Razak will have fans believing that a win is not impossible. Welcome back Razor.

EASTER SUNDAY BASH 16th April 2006

The game against Houghton Revolution was cancelled to allow players from the Christian faith to attend church and enjoy their afternoon meal with their families. The cancellation also allowed USL to hold a pre cup final bash at their club headquarters in Wing village. The four hour celebration gave players a chance to discuss the highs and lows of their semi final match against Bedford Pad, as well as talk about how to tactically defeat AFC Chalk Hill in the final. The board stressed to players that they must be disciplined at all times and respect all those around them. There shall be a lot of people attending the final and the club must be seen as very sporting and gentlemanly. The meal was supplied by defender Ajmol Ali, who owns a fried chicken joint in Leighton Buzzard. Overall, a good day out.

STALEMATE 9th April 2006

Luton Warriors 3 United Sporting Luton 3

The Warriors began the better side by playing some neat one touch football. Physically, they are a very strong side and today were mentally on top as well. They battled hard to keep possession of the ball and made repeated attempts at the USL goal. One spectator told USL Web "It was super entertainment and in every minute there was something exciting to watch. At times it felt the Warriors had five strikers." His words were not far from the truth. Indeed, all throughout this season, Luton Warriors played no nonsense football. It seems their gameplan is plain and simple. Pick up the ball and counterattack. If it weren't for the brilliance of the USL centre halves, the scoreline would have been very different. At half time the score was 3-1 to the Warriors and Manager Azad Ali was clearly very upset. Ali told USL Web"I think the Warriors are a superb playing side but I know I have a squad that can match them in all departments. At the interval I made my frustration clear and they delivered." With 25 minutes left in the second half, USL began frustrating the Luton Warriors. Junaid Afzal was changed to left back, Suna Miah came on to be the extra man in midfield, which left Yasir Rashid as the lone striker. The change in team formation allowed USL to dominate the midfield and for once enjoy constant counter attacking. Renan Ramos was on great form as he helped pile on the pressure, which subsequently helped Yasir Rashid gain his fourth hatrick of the season. An excellent start by the Warriors and a magnificent ending by USL. All in all a 3-3 draw is appreciated by both managers.

  • USL Man of the match - Renan Ramos
  • USL Fair player - Yasir Rashid
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 3
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Declan McCabe 8.5/10
  • Attendance - 18
BE FAIR 6th April 2006

The USL webteam wish to apologise to Windsor Castle FC for using any words or statements that they view as unfair. It is not in our nature to be unfair and will try to maintain neutrality in our reporting. The apology comes after receiving an e-mail from Dean Ashton of Windsor Castle FC. "You scored two goals from debatable decisions from a ref who seemed intent on not giving us two clear cut penalties and blowing up any slight contact we put on your players. I know it's your website and most of the teams actually enjoy reading it but try a bit of unbiased reporting!!

USL RECEIVE THE BARRY BOLTON AWARD 5th April 2006

Barry Bolton met USL today and presented them the Luton News Team of the Week award. The local paper viewed the club's win over Bedford Pad as a true underdog victory. Barry Bolton Windows company are the sponsorers of the weekly award and posed in front of the camera. His photo with USL can be seen in today's edition of the paper.

NOT SO GREAT 2nd April 2006

United Sporting Luton 5 Great Holm Steel 2

The last time these two teams met, USL were beaten 5-2. In that match five first team players were out, either by way of injury or work related circumstances. Today, USL fielded their strongest squad and hammered the Steelers 5-2. USL went a goal down, just as they did in the Centenary Cup Semi final match against Bedford Pad. Again it was down to sloppy defending. Just as that match, USL woke up and fought hard to get back in to the game. The defence held their line well and fed the midfield with some neat passes. The equaliser came from a wonderfully taken solo effort by Yasir Rashid. The goal revitalised USL to greater heights and in true come back fashion took a 4-1 lead. The Steelers pulled a goal back and for a brief moment showed signs of a comeback but man of the match Ajmol Ali made sure that the day belonged to USL. It was probably USL's most comfortable win of the season, regardless the scoreline not being double figures.

  • USL Man of the match - Ajmol Ali
  • USL Fair player - Aziz Miah
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 2, Renan Ramos, Tajul Islam and Nelson Longwe
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Ashu Besung 8/10

WINNING CONTINUES 26th March 2006

Windsor Castle 0 United Sporting Luton 2

Manager Azad Ali was left smiling today, something of a rarity this season. His side appear to have gained tremendous self belief and determination after the shock Centenary cup semi final win over Bedford Pad. Throughout the game USL never looked under any real pressure and if more of the chances were put away, the scoreline may well have been different. Striker Junaid Afzal was took a knock in training and is out injured for a fortnight. Semi final hero Peter Wilson was in ill health but still managed to play the full 90 minutes. USL's Man of the match Duhaj Uddin told USL web 'The whole team played well today and things are looking better. We held the ball well and at times passed it around very comfortably. The only jigsaw left for us to complete is to get the strikers putting away the many chances that are created.'

  • USL Man of the match - Duhaj Uddin
  • USL Fair player - Aziz Miah
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid and Suna Miah
  • Cards - None

USL EASE INTO CENTENARY FINAL 12th March 2006

Bedfordshire Centenary Cup Semi Final

United Sporting Luton 5 Bedford Pad 1

It was by far USL's best game of the season and what better time for it to happen. Bedford Pad came to the game as the superior of the two teams. In the quarter finals they beat Melson Arms 2-1. The result sent shockwaves around the USL dressing room because they were shamefully thrashed twice by the Melson army. Most neutrals believed another heavy defeat was on the cards and prepared themselves for the worst. USL Secretary Shakayet Hussain told USL web '"Coming to the Semi Final is more than what we anticipated. Anything more than that is an early Christmas present'.

What was predicted to be a defeat by most neutrals, turned out to be a one sided affair. Bedford Pad began by being the better side and deservedly took the lead in just under five minutes. A mix up in defence allowed the Bedford strikers to pounce and poke in the goal. Bedford could have added a second but the USL defence found their position and from than on were never under any immense pressure. At half time the score was 3-1 to USL and looking comfortable for a win. The only injury of the game was so severe, medics were broght in to carry James Brandon to hospital. The Bedford midfielder received injury to the neck as he collided with USL dynamo Peter Wilson. With 20 minutes to go USL overwhelmed a lethargic Bedford side and gave them little hope as they created a flurry of chances. Iin the end 5-1 is just about right. Who says underdogs can't gain glory.

  • USL Man of the match - Peter Wilson
  • USL Fair player - Tajul Islam
  • Scorers - Peter Wilson, Renan Ramos, Tajul Islam and Yasir Rashid 2.
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Michael Barton 7/10
  • Attendance - 45
CONFIDENCE RETURNS 5th March 2006

Hawthorn Athletic 0 United Sporting Luton 11

Last weeks defeat at the hands of Ramblers Eleven was unthinkable but it happened. Manager Azad Ali asked his players to wisen up and show that they have the pedigree to play better football and work hard to the final whistle. They did just that. After only 25 seconds Junaid Afzal scored to become the quickest goal scorer in a league match. Afzal, who returned from injury, put on a fine display of passing and dribbling, which earned him man of the match. His enthusiasm boosted his team's confidence and desire to destroy Hawthorn. Eventually, after being 6-0 up, Athletic simply faded away. If USL can continue today's form of play against Bedford Pad, we are in for a fantastic semi final clash next Sunday.

  • USL Man of the match - Junaid Afzal
  • USL Fair player - Tajul Islam
  • Scorers - Junaid Afzal 3, Yasir Rashid 3, Aziz Miah 2, Duhaj Uddin, Mohbub Hussain and Tajul Islam (Pen)

RAMBLERS SECOND ONLY WIN 26th February 2006

United Sporting Luton 1 Ramblers Eleven 2

Just when things were looking great, everything comes falling down. Who would have predicted that this was a game USL will lose. The defeat even surprised General Secretary of the league Alan Shury. This was only the second win for Ramblers Eleven. However, make no mistake, the hungrier of the two teams won on the day. Every Rambler went for the tackle, header and the ball when it was free. So why shouldn't they win? USL supporter Humayuen Bari was at the game and told USL Web ' It's the same old story. We play well but don't put away our chances.' In all honesty, if it weren't for the brilliance of defenders Mujahid Zaman and Aziz Miah, USL could easily have been beaten by a bigger scoreline.

  • USL Man of the match - Mujahid Zaman
  • USL Fair player - Shamim Ali
  • Scorers - Colin Thomas
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Godfrey Fredrick 8.5/10
  • Attendance - 8
A LOSS TOO MUCH 19th February 2006

United Sporting Luton 0 AFC Chalkhill 5

AFC Chalkhill tightened their grip on top spot by beating USL today. However, Manager Azad Ali believes the scoreline did not reflect his players playing very well. He told USL Web 'The players were all looking forward to this match as we had all our players back from injury. Yasir Rashid scoring an own goal did not help matters. There were plenty of chances for us to get something out of thegame but none were taken. That is the difference between us and Chalkhill.' Ali's words could not be further from the truth. The entire season saw chance after chance wasted. If the goals were to go in, life in the league may well have been different.

  • USL Man of the match - Ajmol Ali
  • USL Fair player - Shamim Ali
  • Scorers - None
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Chalkhill Manager 8/10

A WIN AT LAST 12th February 2006

Houghton Revolution 2 United Sporting Luton 8

Manager Azad Ali was delighted to know that he has all the players back for this crucial bottom of the league clash with Houghton Revolution. The wet and awful weather did not really help assist both teams to play good possessing football. Instead, they were fighting both the wind and a muddy surface. This could be an excuse for Houghton to shout about. After all, they just did not lose, they were hammered 8-2 by a full strength USL line up. Defender Ajmol Ali scored two fine goals that reflected his dynamic display, keeping the back line in good order. Yasir Rashid and Peter Wilson both created havoc in the Houghton midfield, twisting and turning their opponents. If this recent good form continue, USL will end the campaign mid table. Their only chance of glory this season is winning the Beds Centenary Cup.

  • USL Man of the match - Mujahid Zaman
  • USL Fair player - Duhaj Uddin
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 2, Peter Wilson 2, Ajmol Ali 2, Shamim Ali and Renan Ramos
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Declan McCabe 8/10

ANOTHER GAME, ANOTHER DEFEAT 5th February 2006

Melson Arms 7 United Sporting Luton 1

It was another defeat for USL and once again it is to current league leaders Melson Arms. The game was very much similar to the game both teams played a month ago. Melson maintained their supremacy in midfield and in the attacking line. Their team shape is evrey teams nightmare. Always counterattacking and keeping possession of the ball. USL never really looked like winning the game and worked hard to minimise damage.

  • USL Man of the match - Mujahid Zaman
  • USL Fair player - Tajul Islam
  • Scorers - Tajul Islam
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Godfrey Fredrick
  • Attendance - 12
GREAT STEEL OF FIRE 29th January 2006

Great Holm Steel 5 United Sporting Luton 2

Another match and another weak USL line up. So it's no surprise that USL were beaten. From the very start of the match USL did not look in good shape. Great Holm Steel played patiently and raised their supremacy gradually. They piled on the pressure from the wing which made life difficult for the centrehalves, whom USL rely on to keep the opposition out. There were a considerable number of players missing, especially key players such as Kevin Garbett, Renan Ramos and Yasir Rashid. Next week it's Melson Arms. May there be a shining light at the end of the tunnel.

  • USL Man of the match - Duhaj Uddin
  • USL Fair player - Shamim Ali
  • Scorers - Shamim Ali

CHALKED OFF THE FIELD 22nd January 2006

AFC Chalkhill 9 United Sporting Luton 1

When Suna Miah scored to make it 1-1 USL thought things may be getting better. With a weak line up Manager Azad Ali was left pondering how they game would have been if he had a full squad. At half time the score was 2-1 and Chalkhill Supremo Lewis Mills was wondering how poorly his side was playing. A tough haf time team talk rejuvenated Chalkhill, who went on to dominate the game and thus produce the biggest defeat of the season for USL. Manager Azad Ali told USL Web ' The players determination died down after going 4-1 behind. What's more, as there was only 11 players availble for selection, no fresh legs could be brought on. There were a lot of tired legs out there today.'

  • USL Man of the match - Peter Wilson
  • USL Fair player - Ajmol Ali
  • Scorers - Suna Miah

SOMERSET DO DOUBLE OVER USL 15th January 2006

Somerset Tavern 4 United Sporting Luton 2

It's now 3 defeats in a row for USL in the league. The loss means that Somerset are the first team to do the league double over them. Christian Baxter's first goal of the season was not enough to help USL break the run of bad luck which they are experiencing. Things don't appear to be improving as a host of players will not be available for next week's visit to league leaders AFC Chalkhill.

  • USL Man of the match - Christian Baxter
  • USL Fair player - Junaid Afzal
  • Scorers - Christian Baxter and Yasir Rashid

MELSON NEW YEAR 8th January 2006

United Sporting Luton 3 Melson Arms 7

New Year and another league defeat. Although USL are doing very well in the league, many are left bemused into why the team are playing poorly in the league. Manager Azad Ali told USL Web 'Melson are one of the best squads in the league but loosing 7-3 raises a lot of questions. The answers are very much upsetting. We play well at times to send fear into the opposition but on many occassions we lack concentration'. The match was full of incident and kept referee Ashok Kumar very busy. Melson are a passionate side but at times their aggressiveness is beyond acceptance. There were a lot late tackles and constant abuse. A tactic which the USL players were very much prepared for leading up to the game. The scoreline would have been less if the USL defence maintained their eye on the Melson forward line, which in hindsight was very impressive. The highlight of the game was Nelson Longwe's first goal for USL.

  • USL Man of the match - Renan Ramos
  • USL Fair player - Shamim Ali
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid, Suna Miah and Nelson Longwe.
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Ashok Kumar

GLIDED DOWN 11th December 2005

Bedfordhire Centenary Cup Quarter Final

United Sporting Luton 2 Oldhill Glider 1

Shamim Ali produced his best football of the season and it could not have come at a nicer time. His excellent display earned him man of the match and praise from the Oldhill camp. Oldhill's manager told USL Web 'This is the best team we played this season. I hope they go on to do vey well.' Both teams were unseparateable at times but on the whole USL just edged it and the scoreline is a true reflection.

  • USL Man of the match - Shamim Ali
  • USL Fair player - Yasir Rashid
  • Scorers - Shamim Ali 2
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Brian Marsh - 7.5/10

USL AWARDED CHARTER STANDARD STATUS 8th December 2005

NO DOUBLE ACHIEVED 4th December 2005

Caddington Social 4 United Sporting Luton 3

Suna Miah returned to first team duty today but failed to help USL get their first double of the season. Last time these two teams met, USL narrowly beat Caddington Social 2-0. However, in today's match, USL were left the most dissapointed for not getting the win. After thrashing Hawthorn, USL were on a high before the kick off. Caddington's new signings proved very valuable. They played ever so well the first half but the second saw USL playing well enough to fork out a draw. The loss has come at unwanted as next week is Centenary Cup Quarter Final day.

  • USL Man of the match - Yasir Rashid
  • USL Fair player - Yasir Rashid
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 2 and Suna Miah

A VERY THORNY MORNING 27th November 2005

United Sporting Luton 9 Hawthorn Athletic 0

The scoreline justifyingly reflected in what was one sided affair. From the very start, USL were in total control of the game. The team formation was key to today's win and the ever dazzling Yasir Rashid netted four times, taking his tally to 11 goals. Manager Azad Ali told USL Web Last week's loss against Stopsley Common spurred the players to go and grind out a favourable result. They did much more than that. I am very happy with their attitude today. Long may this continue.'

  • USL Man of the match - Renan Ramos
  • USL Fair player - Junaid Afzal
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 4, Renan Ramos, Peter Wilson, Ajmol Ali, Jahangir Ahmed and Junaid Afzal

COMMON LUCK 20th November 2005

United Sporting Luton 4 Stopsley Common 6

Today's game was full of excitement at both ends. Stopsley Common passed the ball well and at times had the greater of the possession. USL on the other hands, produced some neat play at times but did not punish their opponents. So far this season both sides had made adequate starts but with both teams possessing flare and a hunger for success, time will tell who does well. If the last twenty minutes is anything to go by, USL are in for a good season. They held the ball well and kept much of the possession. The USL midfielders showed their dominancy on the field, only for the Stopsley defence preventing them from scoring. They were excellent in formation and kept the USL forward line very much frustrated.

  • USL Man of the match - Muhbub Hussain
  • USL Fair player - Mujahid Zaman
  • Scorers - Peter Wilson 2, Yasir Rashid and Jahangir Ahmed

DOWN AND OUT 13th November 2005

Bedfordshire Centenary Cup Round Three

United Sporting Luton 4 Downtown Dunstable 1

Only ten players, no linesman and no bucket with water. That's how seriously Downtown took their match in the third round of the Centenary Cup. Thier progress came to an end when USL's present reserve goalkeeper Samuel Shinkaiye displayed his unforseen predatory skills that gave his team a well deserved win. USL were struggling to make an impact against a weak Downtown team who only managed to field ten players but that did not matter too much. Azad Ali's men failed to capitalise on possession with an extra man. Gradually as the match progressed, USL began playing some good attacking football, showcasing confident passes as well as playing in attacking mode. They had to wait until the 30th minute to get the lead. Prior to that a great number of chances were wasted. None more so than from the two USL strikers. Secretary Shakayet Hussain told USL Web "Last week against Ramblers Eleven our front two strikers played with the sort of flare we awaited for along time. It seemed than that we may have turned the corner. However, today was a wake up call for the frontline. If it wasn't for the dominance displayed by the midfielders we would've been embarrassingly defeated." Downtown didn't appear to be a team with only ten men. Their style of football were at times mesmerising and deservedly equalised and it remained so after 90 minutes. Both teams had chances to win the game but luck favoured none. Tajul Islam had the keeper to beat but the ball was mishit and it flew well over the cross bar. Downtown literally faught to get something out of the game. But a superb performance by centre half Mujahid Zaman frustrated them. With the quarter finals beckoning, Downtown made an abundance of late tackles as well as constantly harrassing USL players. Azad Ali could not hide his anger. He told USL Web "Downtown's average age was around 30. Our players average around 21. It should be us who were arrogant and foul mouthed and them as the wise owls. I am just appalled at the way they treated us. If Downtown believed that intimidating was a plus they were taught a very valuable lesson by my players." In hindsight Ali's words were justifyingly true. In the second half of extra time USL put on a show worthy of remembrance. Samuel Shinkaiye, Renan and Peter Wilson all scored three excellent goals that sent USL into the next round.

  • USL Man of the match - Mujahid Zaman
  • USL Fair player - Ajmol Ali
  • Scorers - Renan 2, Peter Wilson and Samuel Shinkaiye.
  • Cards - Junaid Afzal

USL SCRAMBLE TEN 6th November 2005

Ramblers Eleven 0 United Sporting Luton 10

Jahangir Ahmed savoured his 'best game of the season so far' after steering USL to a stunning victory over league strugglers Ramblers Eleven. On a cold and wet morning Ahmed scored a hat trick that gave Manager Azad Ali a sigh of relief. "Jahangir has not had the best of starts this season but on today's performance I feel the lad may have at last found his scoring touch." Ali told USL Web. Although Ramblers are a weak side, their fighting spirit never appeared to have dampened. Even after being ten down, they kept on playing attacking football rather than what most teams do, play defensively. By half time USL were 7-0 up and more or less sealed the victory. In the second half with the wind in front of them USL struggled to capitalise on their first half performance, managing only to score an extra 3 goals. Other scorers were Junaid Afzal, Yasir Rashid and Tajul Islam, all scoring twice. Also captain Peter Wilson got his first league goal of the season.

  • USL Man of the match - Mohbub Hussain

  • Scorers - Jahangir Ahmed 3, Junaid Afzal 2, Yasir Rashid 2, Tajul Islam 2, Peter Wilson 1

RAMADAN DILEMMA 26th October 2005

Five are still out from injury and eight players belonging to the Muslim faith phoned in to say that they shall be staying up all saturday night attending prayers in mosques. The 27th Ramadan out of a possible 30 is recognised as a very holy night. It is an annual event which Muslims throughout the Islamic world participate in. The game against GHS will now be re-scheduled.

USL GET A NAGGING HEADACHE 23rd October 2005

The A&B Luton Sunday League Cup Round One

United Sporting Luton 2 Nag's Head Westoning 3

The Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves once famously commented "It's a funny old game football." How right he is. Seven days ago these two clubs met in the Beds Centenary Cup and USL were run away winners. Today in the A&B Cup Nag's Head showed that nothing is guranteed in Sunday morning football. Having been thrashed 6-3 last week, the men from Westoning were determined to prevent another embarassing scoreline. From the very first minute and throughout most of the first half they were in total control of the game. At half time Nag's Head were 3-0 up and looking good to go through to the next round facing Melson Arms. Nag's striker Mark Guinn was in terrific form as he scored by taking on the USL defence and blasting the ball in to the top right of the USL goal. A goal so good it received claps from all those at the game. Azad Ali showed his frustration at half time by yelling to his players that they were not showing enough hunger for a win. With the exception of Peter Wilson, Junaid Afzal and Kevin Garbett, Ali felt everybody else could and should perform better. In the second half it appeared his words had an effect on the players. USL came out strongly determined to do what they did last week, get a 3-3 draw by full time. That hope was made possible with Junaid Afzal scored his second goal of the season. He cut through the Nag's defence and calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper. The second goal came from Yasir Rashid who scored from a well taken free kick. The ball flew over the Nag's five men wall and dipped just at the right time to beat the keeper. With the scoreline at 3-2 Nag's were not only defending but attacking to gain a fourth goal. For the remaining 20 minutes it could so easily have been a draw but also and in the end a win for Nag's Head. Azad Ali told USL Web after the game "From last weeks game against Nag's we had four key players injured. Tajul (calf), Cheung (knee), Nelson (knee), and Shamim (ill) were greatly missed. Their absence was our downfall today. Had they been playing today I don't for one minute believe we would've lost but than again that's football for you."

  • USL Man of the match - Junaid Afzal
  • USL Fair player - Kevin Garbett
  • USL Scorers - Junaid Afzal and Yasir Rashid
  • Cards - Mohbub Hussain USL (Yellow for unsporting behaviour)
  • Referee - Declan McCabe 8.5/10

INJURIES GALORE 17th October 2005

Manager Azad Ali was left bitterly dissapointed today when he was informed that five players were left injured after yesterdays cup clash against Nag's Head Westoning. Tajul Islam, Cheung Mann, Shamim Ali and Nelson Longwe will all be out of the rematch with Nag's next Sunday in the league cup.

YASIR GIVES A NAGGING HEADACHE 16th October 2005

Bedfordshire Centenary Cup Round Two

Nag's Head Westoning 3 United Sporting Luton 6

Two weeks ago USL and Nag's Head fought out a 1-1 draw in the league. Today in the Bedfordshire Sunday Centenary Cup the two sides played a totally different game producing one of the highest scoring matches in the round two stage of this famous knock-out competition. USL went goal crazy and smashed six goals past a Nag's Head team, who on paper are producing similar results to USL this season. Both are on equal points, though USL have a game in hand. The first goal came from a penalty, scored by Tajul Islam. Till than there wasn't that much to separate both teams. As this was a cup game, USL and Nag's Head were working hard to keep hold of the wall and maintain discipline in all aspects of the game. Silly mistakes was out of the question. The early chances went to Nag's but a slippery surface prevented them from receiving beautifully presented passes. Nag's than deservedly equalised leaving the USL players contemplating whether or not they are facing punishment for relaxing as they did against Windsor Castle last week. However, Yasir Rashid came on from the subs bench and immidiately put USL 2-1 up. The third goal came from youngster Shamim Ali who scored by wondefully taken header. With the score 3-1, Nag's produced a great come back to draw the game 3-3 after 90 minutes. With Manager Azad Ali away on business, team tactics was left to coach Kukon Ali. He brought on the Dynamic defender Mohbub Hussain and ever cool under pressure Nelson Longwe. Both put on performance that lifted USL to another level. Peter Wilson scored his first goal for USL by taking on four players and than blasting the ball in the top half the net. The first USL hat trick of the season went to Yasir Rashid and with that the game was sealed. Yasir's goal signalled that he was back to his playing best. However, the ultimate question remains, Are USL starting to play their best?

  • USL Man of the match - Peter Wilson
  • USL Fair player - Yasir Rashid
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid 3, Tajul, Shamim and Peter
  • Cards - Tajul Islam USL (Yellow for late tackle)

CASTLE OF EAGLES 9th October 2005

United Sporting Luton 1 Windsor Castle 2

Windsor Castle came into the game having drawn 3-3 with Luton Warriors seven days ago. Not only did they come away with a draw but a great deal of self belief as well. Throughout the game they played some wonderful football creating numerous chances early on. USL got into the game midway through the first half and although defensively they are good as any other team in the league, their strikers were finding it difficult to find the net. Windsor took the lead in the first half but failed to capitalise on their hold of the game. In the second half, USL came out fixed on getting an early equaliser. Manager Azad Ali showed his frustration at the half time team talk and told his players to keep possession in midfield. Ali felt the goals weren't coming due to the lack of service the forwards received from the midfielders. Coach Kukon Ali was also bitterly angry at the players for not showing enough hunger or passion. He strongly emphasised that the midfielders must closely mark their man and pass the ball to the forward line. Both the Coach and Manager's words appear to have paid off when Junaid Afzal scored his first goal of the season from a corner kick. Windsor's colourful defender Tyrone was left fuming at how easily they have allowed the USL equaliser and urged his players to get back in to the playing rhythm like in the first half. His words made an immidiate impact and he himself scored the winner by a super solo effort. Whilst the USL players rewarded themselved by relaxing after getting the equaliser, Tyrone punished them severely. USL Secretary Shakayet Hussain told USL Web "Windsor played like young eagles today. They clawed their way through the midfield and flew high around the field. They deserved the win."

  • USL Man of the match - Mohbub Hussain
  • USL Fair player - Junaid Afzal
  • Scorers - Junaid Afzal
  • Cards - 0
  • Referee - Manager of Windsor Castle 7/10

WHERE WERE THE GOALS 2nd October 2005

Nag's Head 1 United Sporting Luton 1

Plenty of chances came from left, right and centre for both clubs but only two found the net. It could have so easily been 2-2 only for both teams to hit the goalposts. Nag's head and USL came into the game having won their last game. Another win would see either team leap into the top half of the table. USL started the better side, continously attacking the Nag's defence for the first quarter of the match. Surprisingly and against the run of play, Nag's Head took the lead from their first proper attack. A corner led to the USL defence panicking to get rid off the ball. In the midst of the chaos goalkeeper Samuel Shinkaiye took a knock on the head by one of his own team mates, which left the 19 year old needing treatment. Just before half time both teams were taking turns in enjoying possession as well as attacking the goal. The luck favoured USL as Abdel Razak received a clever pass from the whiz master Yasir Rashid and calmly put the ball away to give USL a deserved equaliser. There was no dull moments in the second half of the game and both teams were very much similar to each other. USL's Mohbub Hussain was on terrific form upsetting the Nag's forward line on many occassions. Manager Azad Ali stated to USL web "I have always wanted a confident defender, comfortable under pressure. In Mohbub I feel the missing jigsaw has been found." Infact Ali's defensive problems may not be of a worry this season. Cheung Mann, Kevin Garbett, Mujahid Zaman and Ajmol Ali all appear to be solid in their positions. So far this season the USL defence has only let in seven goals. Very low compared to other clubs in the league.

  • USL Man of the match - Mohbub Hussain
  • USL Fair player - Abdel Razak
  • Scorers - Abdel Razak
  • Cards - 0
  • Referee - Paul Lowe 8/10

A CASUAL DRAW IN ROUND 2 30th September 2005

The second round of the Beds Centenary Cup will see USL playing away to Sharnbrook Casuals. The Casuals played Nag's Head of Westoning in the opening round of the tournament and put five passed them and conceded one. USL Secretary told USL Web "The scoreline signals that the Casuals will not be a easy tie. We have until the 16th of October to find out all there is to know about them and make sure the manager gets his tactics right on the day." Meanwhile Azad Ali will be visiting Sharnbrook to see just how good the team is.

FIRST LEAGUE WIN 25th September 2005

United Sporting Luton 2 Caddington Social 0

A stunning perfrormance by Yasir Rashid played a pivotal role in giving USL their first win of the season in the league. Rashid who was top scorer last season with 17 goals from 15 matches carried on from where he left off last season scoring the opener by a stunning solo effort. After taking on the Caddington midfield he went passed the defenders to score a stunning goal. He told USL Web "I have scored many goals of that standard last season but this one was something special. I took on an extra player (he laughs). I feel fitter and sharper than ever before and hope to do well for the club this season. I am thankful to the manager for giving me a longer holiday."USL started the game quietly and worked hard to keep possession of the ball but Caddington Social did not make it easy. At times they matched USL to their level of playing and for a brief period produced some delightful touches and crosses only for their forwards not to put them away. The second half was very entertaining as both teams went out hungry for the three points. After the hour mark USL began to get a grip of the game and began to pile pressure on the visitors. The second goal came from scrappy play which saw substitute Jahangir Ahmed hit the crossbar, astonishingly to rebound back to him. This time Ahmed made sure the ball was put away with a thunderous shot over the goalkeeper. Overall, USL put on a better show than they did against Smith's Sports in the Beds FA Centenary Cup. With the new faces playing well, it's no wonder manager Azad Ali seems just a little happier.

  • USL Man of the match - Peter Wison
  • USL Fair player - Yasir Rashid
  • Scorers - Yasir Rashid, Jahangir Ahmed

RAZAK'S EARLY STRIKE DECIDES TIE 18th September 2005

Bedfordshire Centenary Cup Round One

United Sporting Luton 3 Smiths Sports Reserves 2

This was a first for United Sporting Luton as they played in the Bedfordshire Centenary Cup. Talsiman Abdel Razak had an eventful and painful game. He played the last fifteen minutes with an injury to the toe. It was an entertaining tie that produced super chances created by both sides. Smiths took a deserved lead 10 minutes into the first half and were piling on the pressure. However, a comfortable performance by new goalkeeper Samuel Shinkaiye kept the Smiths frustrated. USL than moved up a gear and made chance after chance. An USL goal was inevitable and it came from an Abdel Razak penalty. The goal transformed the team from uninspiring to one roaring for more goals. Razak than put USL two up with a fantastic solo effort, twisting and turning around the Smiths defence. From than on chances were few and far until Tajul Islam scored his first goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-1. Picking the ball up from half way Taj leapt past the defenders and cleanly placed the ball to the goalkeepers left. With minutes to go Smiths Sports kept the game still open by scoring their second. USL hung on for the win and will take a lot of confidence going into the second round of the cup.

FIRST CENTENARY SHOWDOWN 13th September 2005

The 18th of September is Centenary Cup day in Bedfordshire and USL will be playing in it for the first time. Their first round opponents are Smith Sports Reserves who play in the Bedford and District League. Azad Ali has received thumbs up from USL Chairperson Dr. Ajaz Zamarad to introduce two new faces to the team. Dr. Zamarad told USL Web " I want to see the manager bring in new and exciting players. The club must move forward and enhance the quality of play on the field. This sunday is a big day and we need a big result."

SUMMER SET ON USL'S FIRST GAME 11th September 2005

United Sporting Luton 2 Somerset 4

USL was left dissapointed today after they were beaten 4-2 by Somerset. The first game of the campaign didn't live up to expectations and very much reflected the day itself. The conditions weren't what you would expect in early September. The fog was so strong that it was difficult to see other nearby pitches. It was as if summer was over and autumn was early this year. USL's man of the match Peter Wilson however wasn't looking for excuses for the defeat. He told USL web "We were simply poor in the first half and Somerset done ever so well to get the two goal lead. They kept the ball and played it feet to feet. The weather was atrocious but that's sunday league football. You expect that and it must not be used as an excuse for a poor performance." Somerset took a deserved two goal lead in the first half but failed to capitalise their good form earlier in the second half. USL fought back from goals by Shamim Ali and a good solo effort from right back Cheung Mann. However, Somerset found the form they had in the first half and scored two more goals, leaving their boss Damian very happy. USL Manager Azad Ali is still short of raising his players fitness and feels he is four players short of creating a strong side. He told USL Web "I will be bringing in three or four more players in to the squad. At the moment we are in need of strong central defenders as well as a Lampard in midfield."

  • USL Man of the match - Peter Wilson.
  • USL Fair player - Junaid Afzal
  • Scorers - Cheung Mann and Shamim Ali.
  • Cards - None
  • Referee - Ashok Kumar 8.5/10

KUKON ALI IS THE NEW ASSISTANT COACH 7th September 2005

Kukon Ali's record speaks for itself. The man who turned a below par Lea Sport into a solid all rounde club has today signed up to coach USL. Kukon's Lea Sports have folded after seven years under his management. Throughout that time they have earnt respect and admiration from all walks of footballing life. Kukon will be bringing with him not only coaching skills but an abundance of experience as well. He told USL Web that he is looking forward to what he describes "As a fresh new challenge to reach new heights. I see USL going the same way as I want to go".

OPENING DAY GAME CANCELLED 4th September 2005

USL's opening day clash with Nation Sports will be re-scheduled for another date as most players from both teams are still away on holiday or attending close relative / friend weddings. The opening day however belonged to the Luton Warriors and Melson Arms. Both outshun their opponents with convincing home wins. Melson beat Nag's Head 4-0 and the Warriors thrashed Stopsley Common 8-3. Both teams are regarded as potential champions this season.

USL Manager Azad Ali kept close eye on the results and told USL Web "We aren't afraid of anyone but some of today's results suggest that I keep watch over most of the clubs this season. I don't like travelling but when the newcomers like Melson make big score lines than I need to know where their strengths and weaknesses are. If we are to avoid the dismal seasons of the past than we ought to be working hard on our own weaknesses. The pre-season games have shown me more positiveness from the players and that is what I want."

FIRST EVER FINAL FOR USL 21st August 2005

USL played their first ever tournament final today and came close to winning it. They began the tournament as outsiders and drew 0-0 with Sportsman A, whom they went on to play in the final, only to lose 5-4 on penalties. The highlight of the tournament was USL thrashing the renowned St. Joseph's 5-1.

Two years ago USL were the losers in the semi-final with Lewsey FC. However, luck has favoured USL this time round when they beat Lewsey in a nerve wracking penalty shoot out. The 2005 winners Sportsman A applauded USL's performance throughout the day and have respectfully invited them for next year. Azad Ali, Manager of USL told USL Web " Coming to this annual competition provides me an wonderful opportunity to conclude on who my first team players are. Today there were 16 who have given me a lot to think about before the season starts. For once I am spoilt for choice."

ORGANISERS IGNORE REFEREE 31st July 2005

The Bedford 7 a side National Tournament has been running for five years and is regarded as a very well organised competition. The referees are FA trained and some even hold UEFA taught certificates. However, after the group stages were completed, USL were told by organisers that thay were out of the competition, despite finishing second in their group. The game between Bedford Firm and MYA Youth B of Milton keynes drew 0-0, a fact agreed upon by both the referee and the USL staff who were watching the game. The organisers than inform USL that the result was infact 1-0 to Bedford Firm and not 0-0 as stated by the referee.

USL Secretary Shakayet Hussain was left outraged with the decision. He told USL Web "It's disgraceful to say the least. The organisers need to hire professional mathmaticians for the adding up. Both the referee and I recorded the scores using the same pen. Surely the referres word is bigger than the players." It seems as far as the organisers were concerned...just ignore the ref and allow both Bedford teams through to the knock out stages.

WINGED OUT 30th July 2005

The annual Arnold Woolhead tournament saw USL participating in it for the first time. After a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wing 'A' team, USL never looked back as they went on to the quarter final stage losing to The Dove 'A' team. USL fielded a weak line up because many of the players were on holiday as well as attending weddings.

DATE SET FOR NEW SEASON 26th July 2005

The new season commences on the 4th day of September. There are only fourteen teams in division one this year and there shan't be a second division due to low applications to the Luton Sunday League. USL are away to Nation Sports and Manager Azad Ali is focused on getting a winning start.

THE SMITH'S ARE COMING 22nd July 2005

The draw for the Beds County Cup has drawn USL with Bedford outfit 'Smiths Sports FC'. The date set is the 18th of September with USL being the home team. Not much is known about the opposition and Manager Azad Ali is every bit cautious. He told USL web that the cup tournaments are very important and over the next coming months he will be improving his players both physically and mentally. He is also hoping to make the upcoming season USL's best yet. Ali is coming under pressure from the USL board to provide some much needed silverware.
